Moisture and Water Functions
Another key function of clothing to protect us against the rain. However clothes cannot be totally impermeable to water as our bodies produce singificant quantities, depending on the temperature. Therefore clothing must repel the rain but allow clothes to 'breathe'. In addition we want our clothes and textile not to be damages by spills of fluids. Finally, what if clothes could clean themselves as we wear them?

The classic material that transformed the design of jackets was Goretex from Gore. This material prevented external water from coming in but it enabled the wearers clothes to breathe. This was achieved by its micro-porous structure which prevents droplets of water from penetrating but allow water vapour to slowly across it.

Passive Functions
  • Breathing fabrics
  • Self cleaning - superhydrophobic

Easy to Clean Coatings

Spray on coatings have been developed for textiles which combine water and oil-repellant, antistatic and flame-retardant properties

Soiling - wine, soft drinks, oil - are kept on the surface and can be removed easily

Lotus Effect Textiles

By combining surface structures, which have a roughness at a range of scales from hundred of microns (which woven textiles already have) down to hundreds of nanometres, and using highly water repellent surfaces provided by, for example, ultathin coatings of fluoropolymers, fabrics can be made to be 'super-hydrophobic - water droplets sit on the surface and easily fall off. This 'lotus effect' both protects against staining and also gives self cleaning properties against dust.

Coatings for textiles with these properties are constantly improving.

Flash Dried Fabrics

3xdry

3XDRY® finishing technology was developed to provide a treatment that retains water resistance on the face of a fabric and increases wicking on the back. The two functions are truly separated within the fabric, which remains highly breathable.
3XDRY® uses a special process to apply a hydrophilic finish on the back that wicks perspiration away from the body, spreading it over the fabric, and evaporating it quickly on the face. It also has a hydrophobic finish that repels water and dirt.
The fabric dries six to eight times faster than untreated fabric. 3XDRY ® also incorporates a hygienic treatment to control odor.

Nano-dry from Nano-Tex

NANO-DRY treatment is a structural modification of the material at the molecular level that produces outstanding wicking characteristics and prevents chilling caused by the evaporation of sweat on the skin. The material moves sweat from its origin and enables the fluid to rapidly be removed away from the skin.

Active Functions
  • Detect external water threat
  • Actively protect against water ingress e.g. change hydrophobicity, porosity
  • Actively protect against drowning (e.g. deploy floats)
  • Collect and recycle body fluids, e.g. sweat, urine
