Shirts, which are flush against the torso, provide a
suitable platform for locating body sensors, such as electrodes for
recording heart electrical activity (ECG) to determine the heart rate
and for methods of recording breathing, such as injecting a current and
determining how it is modulated as the chest expands and contracts
(impedance pneumography) and using stretch receptors to measure the
expansion of the chest.
In addition temperature sensors, and means of heating and cooling the
chest can be incorporated.
As a result, the main types of smart shirts record human vital signs
and are addressed at the health and sports training markets.
Adidas and Polar have together developed a sports
jacket (for men and women) - in two form factors – the
Adidas Techfit
Fusion Crop Top and the Adidas Techfit Fusion Singlet – both of which
monitor ECG and breathing.

This includes integrated heart rate sensors - soft stretch
integrated sensor pads - attached to the adistar Fusion apparel
without a chest strap.
The garment also integrates the following elements:
- Techfit: Garments which
improve muscle alignment, preventing fatigue build up enhances
athletic performance.
- Climacool: Provides heat
and moisture management through ventilation.
This clothing is part of an integrated training
system, combining the Polar S3 stride sensor, Polar wearlink transmitter
(a watch-like device), Polar RS800 Running computer, and the adidas
adistar Fusion shoe.
