Extreme Weather

Clothing that protects mountaineers, climbers, skiers and snowboarders from the extremes of cold, wind, rain and snow have offered the best in light weight insulation, water protection whilst enabling breathability. Now a number of suppliers have been integrating an ability to control music players and phones from buttons on the outside of the jacket thereby enabling control whilst not exposing the wearer to the climate.

Heated gloves, boots, shirts and jackets are also gaining acceptance.

O’Neill

US sports apparel firm O'Neill has consistently supplied outdoor clothing with integrated smart functionality.

For example, formerly known as the HUB, the H3.Series Entertainment & Communications Jacket, features an iPod compatible entertainment system that can be controlled by the soft touch remote controls on the left hand sleeve. A Bluetooth module stationed in the chest pocket and the microphone in the jackets collar enables hands-free calling. A standard headphone jack is incorporated into the chest pocket and allows the rider to use their own headphones.

O'Neill now also supply the NavJacket - a GPS navigation integrated into a high performance Gore-Tex jacket. The NavJacket is a collaboration between O’Neill’s Wearable Electronic group and MyGuide (www.myguidegps.com) a company delivering GPS navigation solutions.

There are two ways the GPS guidance is provided; either via a display (OLED) on the sleeve or via voice guidance via the headphones integrated into the hood of the jackets. Current speed, up-to-date local weather forecasts, and in-depth details about route, such as distance and time have all been incorporated into the flexible display on the sleeve of the jacket.
