Around the world military forces are
exploring how smart clothing can be used to increase the safety
and effectiveness of military forces. The use of advanced
functions including communications, location awareness, vision
equipment, has all been adopted using piece meal systems.
Military clothing already includes protection against the
elements and body armour antiballistic protection.

In the U.S.
Natick Laboratories has been developing the Future Force
Warrior Programme. This includes:
-
Protective
Clothing Ultra-Lightweight, Low Bulk,
Multi-Functional, Full Spectrum Protective Combat Ensemble.
-
Wireless
Networking. Networked FFW small unit/teams with
robust team communications, state-of-the-art distributed and
fused sensors, organic tactical intelligence collection
assets, enhanced situational understanding, embedded
training, on-the-move planning, and linkage to other force
assets
-
Power
Generation 72-hour continuous autonomous team
operations, high density, low weight/volume,
self-generating/re-generating, reliable, safe power
source/system
-
MIssionSupport Unconstrained vertical and lateral
movement at full up combat/assault capability during mission
execution. Optimized cognitive and physical fightability,
on-board physiological/medical sensor suite with enhanced
prompt casualty care.
-
Vital
signs: core temperature, skin temperature, heart
rate, blood pressure, hydration state, stress level (mouth
sensors), thermal state, sleep status, workload capacity of
the warrior.
